Book Reviews and Comments from Readers

Beverlye's collection of poems and reflections captures what most people with a serious illness feel but can not put into words. Written by a gifted observer of life, it is a moving experience for fellow patients or others in the healthcare business to read. --Dr. Kurt Ransohoff, Director of Samsun Clinic

Hi Beverlye,
I read your beautiful book last evening and it was with me all night.  Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings and opening yourself up.  I have felt so many of those emotions, experienced so many of those same thoughts, been there, done that.  I even identified with your divorce poem.  I had exactly the same reaction.  It's a book that I want to read again and again and to give and give to friends. --Gail Gelles, Santa Barbara News Press

In spite of wonderful family and medical support, many cancer patients will from time to time find themselves alone on their journey. With "ICan Do This," Beverlye Hyman Fead offers an additional source of inspiration and hope.
-- Rob Lowe, Actor and Cancer Activist

Dear Beverlye,
I don't think it's too much to say that your book's beauty bowled me over!  The layout combining poetry, prose, photographs and paintings works perfectly!  Each enhances the others simply and elegantly.  The semi-transparencies of your orchids is a brilliant touch.  Thank you for showing all of us writers and poets that love and persistence pays off!
-- Lois Klein, Poet

This is exactly the book I have been searching for in stores, libraries, and on the Internet, since I was diagnosed. Her poetry and prose are beautiful, but it is the total and poignant honesty of her insights and feelings that touched me the most. There isn't one word in that book which I don't relate to in many ways.
She really expresses, so much better than I ever could, what a profound, scary and rewarding experience this cancer journey is. And even though my scans were positive, I now have a new (and better) perspective on how to live with the uncertainties of the future and the realities of the present. That will never change. I am changed. Thank you so much for your caring and support, Susan, and especially for sending her book - I keep it by my nightstand. --Diana

Dear Mrs. Hyman Fead,
What a delight to receive a copy of your book.  The poetry and art work are inspirational.  I am so happy you are doing well and able to enjoy your life to the fullest.  We have treated several additional patients with this regimen and continue to see good results.  One patient currently in treatment will draw strength from reading your book, as she is in the difficult early stages of treatment. I will speak with our nurse educator to obtain additional copies of your book for our patient library. --Charles A. Forscher, M.D., Cedar-Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Center

What courage and strength it takes to thank your cancer for all the blessings life offers. Beverlye Hyman Fead does just this in her moving memoir that traces her fears, struggles, and joys through a year of treatment. Her prose and poetry is a generous gift of love and hope to all those who live with cancer and those who love them. I Can Do This is a book you want to have by your bedside during the long hours of the night. -- Perie Long, PhD, Registered Poetry Therapist; author of The Privacy of Wing
